Frequently Asked Questions

What skip sizes do Towens offer?

At Towens we offer a variety of skip sizes to ensure that all your needs are met. The skip sizes currently available to you are:

  • 2 yd
  • 4 yd
  • 6 yd
  • 8 yd
  • 12 yd

Our trained operatives will talk to you about your specific requirements and they will be able to determine the type of skip you need.

Larger skip sizes and RORO Skips are available, please contact us on 01934 424242 and see our sizing guide for more information.

How do I know what size I need?

If you’re still unsure after reading through the sizes on offer, our trained operatives will talk to you about your specific requirements, and they will be able to determine the type of skip you need.

How can I load the skip effectively?

Make a flat base layer: We advise placing heavy, flat items such as wood at the bottom of the skip in order to create a stable base, utilising available space where possible. It is recommended to continue to add flat layers as far up the skip as you can, minimising the amount of empty space so you have enough room to fill the skip with your loose debris.

How can I handle bulky items?

Break the items down: A great way to optimise space in your skip is to dismantle the items as much as possible. For example, if you’re putting in a bed or some chairs, take them apart as much as you can.

How can I load the skip safely?

For safe loading, there are several key steps to remember. The first is to wear sturdy shoes and gloves. These protect you from sharp objects, and in case of an accident. When lifting items into the skip, we also strongly advise lifting and carrying the items with your legs and not your back. To do this, bend your knees and keep the load close to your body when lifting. If you find that you are unable to fit everything into one skip, it is important to order a second skip to ensure safe and efficient loading.

Can I overload my skip?

No! Overweight skips are dangerous, which is why we recommend checking the weight limit on every Towens skip you hire.

How much does a skip permit cost?

The cost for a permit is between £70 and £100 and takes from 3-5 working days to obtain. Towens are happy to arrange this for you.

Please note: We are unable to get licences in some areas. For more information, please call 01934 424242.

Are there items that I can’t put into my skip?

Yes! Skips have prohibited items due to safety and sustainability. These materials that aren’t permitted are:

  • Any electrical items
  • Asbestos
  • Batteries
  • Gas cylinders
  • Paint tins
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Plasterboard
  • Fridges/freezers
  • Tyres
  • Pressurised containers
  • Food waste
  • Liquids of any description

Skip Loading Tips

Our first tip is to make a flat base layer. This can be achieved by placing flat, heavy items like planks of wood or cardboard boxes at the bottom of a skip, creating a stable base. This ensures you don’t waste space, maximising the amount of room you have for unwanted items – whilst giving you a stable foundation.

The next step is to dismantle bulkier items such as sofas or beds into their smaller parts. This allows them to fit into the skip much more effectively, again allowing you to fit more items inside. These bulky items can also be dangerous and difficult to manoeuvre, so dismantling them can reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others.

Towens waste storage

What happens to your waste?

Sustainability is at the core of all we do, with the waste we receive being transported to our Transfer Station, where it is tipped out to be processed. There, hardcore or soil-only skips are deposited directly into piles for turning into recycled aggregates, topsoil and subsoils for use in construction projects. Plasterboard gets stored for recycling by plasterboard manufacturers.

We recycle around 92% of the waste we receive, dedicating ourselves to avoiding trips to landfill. Our recyclable waste is segregated, stockpiled, and transported to suitable recycling facilities to turn into other products or to fuel stock for waste to energy plants.

We offer a whole host of waste management services, including recycling and soil testing.
